Woman-Centricâ„¢ Builder January 2007
SPEC BUILD October 2006
Asheville Parade of Homes 2004
Sparkes Construction Co. Inc. named exclusive
Woman-Centric™ builder for 6 North Carolina counties.
"How
will this home specifically serve the needs of the woman of the house?"
"How will this stage of home construction create a healthier home for
her family?"
"Will our construction techniques and materials provide her with
a home that will provide enjoyment, convenience and satisfaction for
years to come?"
These are but a few of the questions that help Sparkes Construction
Co. Inc. maintain a woman-centric perspective throughout each homebuilding
project.
Owner David Sparkes wife, Kimberly, who co-owns the company, helps him
pick woman-centric home plans and does most of the decorating and selections.
"We may spend a month and a half just choosing the perfect plan
for a property. Once I get the home framed, Kimberly's on her way to
multiple
design shops, working with our suppliers around town. She gets the colors
and materials together, then she gives me a list and I go forward with
finishing the house's interior. Kimberly also home schools our two daughters
(ages 5 and 12), manages our rental properties and is earning her real
estate license."
"We are honored to to be chosen as woman-centric homebuilder
in North Carolina." [ Top ]

"Successful Builder —Grateful husband."
“ My
father and his father and his father before him were all builders,” Sparkes
says. “It’s a long lineage of contractors and builders and
handymen. I remember holding nails for my father when I was just ten
years old. When I got old enough, we worked together on remodel jobs.
After high school, I started working in the field with other contractors
to get a feel for different operations.”
By the time Sparkes was 24, he’d earned his contractor’s
license in Florida. But while vacationing in North Carolina, he fell
in love with the area. So he moved north to Asheville and founded Sparkes
Construction, Inc. in 1999.“
I picked up remodel jobs, smaller jobs – whatever it took to make
a living,” Sparkes recalls. “From there, we started doing
bigger turn-key jobs and remodel jobs. Eventually, we were buying and
selling land and building homes.” Sparkes Construction now builds
4 - 6 homes a year, most of
them specs, ranging in price from $250,000 to $700,000.
Sparkes’ wife Kimberly, who co-owns the company, helps him pick
woman-centric home plans and does most of the decorating and selections. “We
may spend a month and a half just choosing the perfect plan for a property.
Once I get the home framed, Kimberly’s on her way to multiple
design shops, working with our suppliers around town. She gets the colors
and materials together, then she gives me a list and I go forward with
finishing the house’s interior. Kimberly also home schools our
two daughters (ages 5 and 12), manages our rental properties and is earning
her real estate license.
“ Another way Kimberly adds a woman’s touch is with the
thank-you baskets she puts together for our homebuyers. She fills them
with wine, coffee, cheeses and a homeowner’s book that has the
warranties and the names of the contractors who worked on the home, plus
a CD recording the building process of the home. Because most of our
homes are built on speculation, we create the CD so the buyers can feel
included in their home’s construction. We take a picture of my
daughters and me putting a Sparkes Construction sign in the ground, then
the footers, the slabs – all the way to the finish work. The homebuyers
really enjoy the CD.
“ I was brought up in an all-boy family,” Sparkes concludes. “ So
I’m especially grateful to have Kimberly to provide a woman’s
point of view. Her perspective and input are invaluable to me. I truly
believe the sale of a
home depends on what the woman sees in it.”
